Belgian Waffles Vs. Regular Waffles

Belgian waffles are a tempting love affair. Unlike their competition, they have depth, they’re sturdy and they considerately hold everything for you. They tend to have deeper pockets, and they’re fluffier on the inside with exciting crisp edges, exactly how a waffle should be. The egg whites cause the airiness and the rise in the waffle and the crispiness come from a Belgian waffle maker that assists in cooking it to the perfect golden hue.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS…

  • Baking Powder: Provides leavening to make the waffles light and fluffy.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Forms the base of the waffle batter, giving structure and texture.
  • Sugar: Adds sweetness and helps with browning.
  • Cinnamon: Adds warmth and a subtle spice flavor to complement the sweetness of the waffles
  • Eggs (Separated): The yolks add richness and moisture, while the whipped egg whites contribute to the waffles’ airy texture

How to Make this Homemade Belgian Waffles Gluten-Free

To make these Belgian waffles gluten-free, use a gluten-free flour blend.

Here’s a suggested substitution:

  • Ensure all other ingredients, such as baking powder and cinnamon, are certified gluten-free to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Substitute the 2 cups of all-purpose flour with 2 cups of a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. Look for a blend that includes xanthan gum or guar gum to help with texture and binding.

Storing & Freezing the Homemade Belgian Waffles

Storage: Allow any leftover waffles to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container or resealable plastic bag in the refrigerator. They can be stored for up to 3 days.

Freezing: For longer storage, individually wrap the cooled waffles in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, simply toast them in a toaster until warmed through and crispy.

Details & Considerations

Let me just say: Hand mixing? Not a great option here. Neither is a pancake mix replacement – If you want to get that truly fluffy, delicious waffle, you have to have the right tools and ingredients A little love goes a long way!
